Public Water

In the U.S., the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulates the public water supply to protect against naturally-occurring and man-made contaminants — including coliform bacteria, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia. But in a 2017 study, the NRDC found that many communities aren’t maintaining their aging infrastructure as the act requires.

Well Water

After a study of over private 2,000 wells, the U.S. Geological Survey found that about 23 percent had at least one contaminant at a level of potential concern. As of 2021, more than 23 million U.S. households use private wells, and homeowners are responsible for overseeing the quality of their well water.
